Neul wins Startup of The Year at British Engineering Excellence Awards (BEEAs)

Young company recognised for its pioneering technology development in the white space arena

Cambridge, UK, 14th October 2011 – Neul today proudly announces that it has won the British Engineering Excellence Awards' (BEEAs') 'Startup of The Year' Award. The award was issued yesterday afternoon at New Electronics' prestigious awards ceremony held at The Globe Theatre on London's South Bank. This award reflects Neul's pioneering work as the first company to produce commercial white space equipment, and its continuing role in helping to foster and co-ordinate the various players in this new industry.

Neul's white space network technology has progressed at a very rapid pace and in less than a year Neul has already delivered a production-ready radio and shipped devices. It has also raised $13million in Series A funding, the largest such investment in a European wireless start up for 10 years.

Neul's technology fully utilises white space spectrum, essentially vacant areas of the television spectrum, for telecommunications purposes. Not only does white space spectrum have excellent propagation characteristics, being able to travel through walls and other obstacles over long distances, but is also free-to-air, making possible enormous cost reductions throughout the wireless data ecosystem that Neul will enable. Neul's technology will fuel a revolution in both rural broadband provision and the predicted 50 billion machine-to-machine connections required by 2020.

“It's great to see Neul afforded such early recognition with such a prestigious award,” commented Neul's CEO James Collier. “This is a testament to the extraordinary hard work of our team. White space has been greeted with huge enthusiasm by the networks and general wireless community as one of the most exciting new technologies of recent years, with huge applications in the M2M arena. Following the recent first meeting of the Weightless Special Interest Group (SIG) to agree a unified standard across the industry, we look forward to building on this success over the coming months.”

About Neul

The name Neul is pronounced like 'fuel' and is from the Gaelic word for 'Cloud'.

Neul was formed in Cambridge, UK in 2010 by a group of entrepreneurs with an impressive track record. The core management team was responsible for building Europe's most successful fabless semiconductor company, CSR.

Neul aims to unify the fragmented world of Machine-to-Machine (M2M) communications, with the world's first white space radio system and a new, open M2M communications standard.

Neul is transforming wireless data communications by slashing the cost of the spectrum, base stations and the terminals needed to set up wide area wireless networks. This will enable our customers to build networks and applications that offer completely new kinds of devices, services and business models.

Neul's grand vision is to bring about a revolution in the way devices and applications communicate. From the predicted 50 billion connected Machine-to-Machine (M2M) devices, through smart metering to local broadband delivery, transportation and beyond, Neul is helping to create 'the internet of everything'.
